  • 本データベースは、1936 年以降に日本国外で開催された日本の古美術品を主体とする企画展および今回の調査で視察した関係展覧会の情報に、2020年以降に開催された日本関係の主な展覧会・展示を収録したものである。
  • 本リストの作成にあたっては、文化庁WEB サイト、東京文化財研究所のWEB サイト内『美術界年史（彙報）』、『月刊文化財』各号、『文化庁月報』各号および展覧会場各館などのWEB サイト、各展覧会図録の記載を参考にしたほか文化庁保管の内部資料および主に次の既刊資料から引用・抜粋した：『国際交流基金 展覧会記録 1972-2012』（2013 年、国際交流基金）、『Japanese Art Exhibitions with Catalogue in the United States of America 1893-1981』 (1981 年、Japan Society)、鬼頭智美「東京国立博物館の国際交流―ナショナルセンターとしての役割―」『MUSEUM』600 号pp.62-67 (2006 年、東京国立博物館)、鬼頭智美「海外日本古美術展にみる『日本』－国家ブランディングとの関わりと展覧会実施における諸問題－」『東京国立博物館紀要』第46 号、pp.57-165（2011 年、東京国立博物館）。
  • 開催国名は、英語の通称を記した。USA=アメリカ合衆国、UK=連合王国。
  • 1967年および1971年の琉球政府による展覧会は、厳密には海外展ではないが、通関手続きの実施など海外での展覧会と同様な準備作業を行っているため、参考までリストに含むこととした。
  • 英語表記の頭のThe は原則省略した。会場および展覧会名の日本語は定訳となっているものがある場合はそれを採用、それ以外は研究代表者が便宜的に訳したもので、必ずしも公式名称ではない。

Ranging from Prehistory to the Pre-Modern Period (1936–2026)

  • This database is the result of the JSPS Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research No. 26282074.
  • This database contains mainly exhibitions of Japanese art ranging from prehistory to the Pre-Modern period that were held after 1936, mainly between 1936-2016, as well as information about related exhibitions that were surveyed between 2014 and 2016 through the above grant. In addition, it includes major exhibitions and displays related to Japan held outside the country since 2020.
  • The following were referenced when compiling the list: the website of the Agency for Cultural Affairs; the Bijutsushikai Nenshi (bulletin) available on the website of the Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties; the journals Gekkan Bunkazai and Bunkachō Geppō; the websites of the museums at which the exhibitions were held; and the exhibition catalogues. I also quoted from internal documents held by the Agency for Cultural Affairs as well as the following published materials: Kokusai Kōryū Kikin Tenrankai Kiroku 1972-2012.   • Countries are referred to by their English abbreviations (e.g. the United States of America is “USA” while the United Kingdom is “UK”).
  • Although the exhibitions held in 1967 and 1971 by the Government of the Ryukyu Islands were, strictly speaking, not held outside of Japan, the basic planning and execution, including customs procedures, was carried out as it would have been for an exhibition in another country. For this reason, these exhibitions have been included in the list for reference.
  • “The” has been omitted from the English names of venues and exhibitions when it appears as the first word. Generally accepted Japanese translations of the names of the venues and exhibitions have been used when available. Otherwise, the names were translated by the authors and may not reflect the official names.
