Preliminary Interviews with Candidates for Project 150 (Exchange of Persons Program in Japan)

  1. The Fine Arts Advisor held exploratory interviews with the above, one after the other. The purpose was to determine knowledge of English, and all-around personality qualifications.
  2. It must be stated that standards are disquietingly low, on these recommendations, with the exception of Mr. Yamanobe and Mr. Atarashi (the latter having already worked in the United States for two years).
The knowledge of English of the other candidates was too little to carry on conversation. In general, also, these men are too old: ages going from 48 to 36.
  3. If this is a sample of the manpower with which we shall have to work, in the National Museum and related institutions, the road ahead lies up-hill. This is not to state, however, that there was not an almost painful desire on the part of the candidates to secure the coveted privilege of going abroad.
