SUBJECT: Exhibits Branch Activities Report for Two Weeks Ending 15 November 1949

1.Production and Distribution

  1. Completed negotiations with representatives of the Hibiya Public Library and the Radio Tokyo Building concerning the display of CIE exhibits. The exhibits New York Public Library and Student Legislature were loaned for ten days' showing to the Hibiya Public Library, while the exhibit Student Legislature was posted in the front entrance to the Radio Tokyo Building for showing to Japanese audiences.
  2. negotiations have bean completed with the Sanseido Book Store in Kanda for loan of CIE book displays encouraging the sale of books translated under the CIE Translation Program.
  3. Completed distribution of nine-hundred and twenty (920) sets of the new CIE-produced kami-shibai entitled Starting A New Life. Each Prefectural Visual Aid Center will receive twenty (20) sets each of this kami-shibai.
  4. Completed translating mouting and captioning five (5) sets of exhibits on Mount Vernon, An American Town. Each set is comprised of thirty-four (34) photographs.
  5. In commemoration of the Kami-Shibai Festival held at the Mitsukioshi Department Store in Shinjuku under the co-sponsorship of the Japan Kami-Shibai Association and the Tokyo-to Education Bureau from 12 November to 20 November, this Branch displayed one set of the CIE-produced kami-shibai entitled Starting A New Life, in exhibit form, while two performances daily were given as a kami-shibai. To date reports indicate audience interest as very good.
  6. Negotiations have been completed with the Kanto Civil Affairs Region, Civil Information representative concerning display of CIE exhibits in the waiting room of the Kanto Civil Affairs Region Building. The exhibit New York Public Library is being displayed this week.
  7. Completed eighteen (18) original rough sketches for the new kami-shibai entitled Animal Farm, an adaptation from George Orwell's book by that name.
  8. As a means of publicizing translated American plays, a series of displays of pamphlets, programs and photographs of American theater productions have been completed. This series, along with the Yale University Theater exhibit and American Theater exhibit were loaned to the Showa Woman's College from 16 November to 22 November 1949 in commemoration of their school festival.
  9. Completed layout of fourteen (14) orientation charts relating to the Japanese Government System for Government Section, GHQ, SCAP.
  10. Completed six (6) designs for Motion Picture Officer as suggestions for a symbol of approval for the Administration Code Group of the Japan Motion Picture Association.
  11. The aggregate daily showing of exhibits from this office between 1 November and 15 November 1949 (including those exhibits loaned out from this office during this period) totaled one-thousand nine-hundred and eighty-three (1,983).

The following one-hundred and sixty-seven (167) photographs were relased to Photo Officer, Press and Publication Branch, for publication or use by Japanese agencies: One (1) photograph on Transportation to the Kokumin Tosho Kanko-kai; thirty-five (35) on various subjects to the Hiroshima Publishing Company: twelve (12) on Architects to the Waseda University; seven (7) on Livestock to the Niwatori-no-kenkyu sha; two (2) on Transportation to the Mainichi Shimbun; one (1) on Crops to the Wakai Nogyo Magazine; five (5) on Education and one (1) on Transportation to the Shogaku-kan Publishing Company; twenty-five (25) on T.V.A. to the Mainichi Newspaper; three (3) on Museum to the Bijutsu Publishing Company; one (1) on Youth Education, one (1) on Recreation and nine (9) on Education (College) to the Keio Jurnalism Kenkyu Kai; six (6) on Recreation (sport) and three (3) on Fair to the Hoso Bunka Magazine; five (5) on Christmas to the Nippon Fujin Shimbun; five (5) on T.V.A. to the Shakaika Times; twenty-six (26) on T.V.A. to the Chuo Koron-sha; nine (9) on T.V.A. to the Hiroshima Publishing Company; five (5) on Housing and two (2) on Racial Type to the Romance magazine Company; one (1) on Youth Organization, one (1) on Chicago and one (1) on Detroit to the America-Japan Press.

Guidance

  1. Reviewed Layout for Kokumin News, a wall newspaper sponsored by the welfare Ministry. This issue on nutrition showed required daily balance of food and minimum caloric requirements.
  2. Conferred with Col. Searle, Yokohama, on Animal Farm publicity. Agreed that all illustrations; display, kami-shibai being produced by CIE, and Mainichi magazine's proposed cartoon strip, should be coordinated and use the same style and characterization.
  3. Conferred with Mr. Grilli, Mr. Neptune and Mr. Cottrell from Legal and Government Sections on material presented for charts.
  4. Reserved decision on three sketches submitted by Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Land Reform Section, on a poster urging Consolidation and Exchange of land plots until a policy check could be made by Agricultural Affairs Officer with NRS.
  5. Conferred with three officials from Sanseido Publishing Company on the possibility of using Hattori Building. Book Displays at their Kanda Store. Present store arrangement dose not allow utilizing windows for displays but Sanseido will be grateful if we would loan the displays for indoor arrangement. In the near future some window remodeling is planned. Animal Farm is not distributed by Sanseido, but the Kravchenko display was requested for 20 November 1949 to coincide with publication of Part II of the translation.
  6. Reviewed plans for a wall newspaper on enlarging fields of employment for women, submitted by the Women's and Minor's Bureau.
  7. Reviewed design for leaflet on Fire Prevention which will be distributed to 600,000 families by Volunteer Fire Association.
